What's up with AOL?

It's been years since I had an AOL account. I heard that they are "free" now. What does this mean? Does AOL still use the dedicated software, or is it web-based? I remember some pretty wild chat-rooms on there -- are they still there? How can you access this? Or is any of it worth the bother?

For a while, it seemed AOL was going to concquer the world. Time-Warner bought it up for a ridiculous price. Now it seems like a footnote in the history of the internet. Comments?

It seems like a footnote because of the crazy pricing. I used to be an AOL member but fired them when they got so arrogant with their prices that they priced themselves right out of the marketplace as far as I was concerned. Their meaning of 'Free' means you can access many things from the AOL.com website now that used to only be accessible from within the community. In fact, the main web page is sorta cool - but the service is still way too pricey for my budget - PLUS the fact that if you install their software, it will absolutely take over your computer and make all kinds of changes to your system that will take forever to undo.

If you call to get their software .. you have to pay.

If you go to aol.com you can get a free account.

After reading this question i called them for you.

    that's what they mean.
