There may be a problem with the usb drivers on your PC.

Try going to Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager. Scroll down to find the Universal Serial Bus (usb)Controllers and open it up with the + sign. If any of the usb ports listed have a yellow exclamation mark, double click on it and choose to Update Drivers.

    Good luck!

Go to the device manager, right click the icons for the usb, and update the usb drivers. Also go the maker of the External HD and see there troubleshooting guide and they might have an update on the device.

Try connecting it to other USB ports. If that doesn' t work:

Right-click on My Computer, choose Manage, from your left go to Device Manager, on your right expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right-click on USB Mass Storage device, select Uninstall, restart your computer and try again.

be certain that you have added service pack 2 to your xp operating system. It is essential to reading usb 2.0 which your external drive runs on.

service pack 2 will also update the host controller. Again, essential for high speed usb devices.

    enjoy your computer.
