What is truly the fastest car in the world?
I've heard all sorts of people talk about how one car is faster than another, but what is the actual fastest car in the world (counting non-streetlegal cars)?

#1? It has to be the Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron. It can go 253 mph+, and 0-62mph in 2.5 secs.
Officially the fastest car in the world. Ever. In a straight line the Bugatti Veyron simply owns the opposition. Electronically limited to 253mph, the Veyron’s top-end superiority is underlined by simply staggering acceleration. Remember the 243mph McLaren F1? Even given a 100mph head start, the Veyron would still beat one to the double ton. More fun stats include emptying the 100-litre fuel tank in 11 minutes at maximum velocity – a situation engineers have described as a ‘safety feature’. Travel that fast for a whole half hour and even the special high-speed tyres would apparently start to melt.
With four turbochargers, the 8.0-litre W16 engine makes a minimum 1000bhp, so it’s no surprise to discover the car contains 17 different cooling devices. Four-wheel drive and sophisticated aerodynamics mean the Veyron isn’t just a hyper-performance dragster, either, cornering incredibly for something weighing 1888kg. A super-fast shifting seven-speed DSG gearbox and mega price-tag completes this ultimate high-speed package. Best Yet, It's street legal.

You said to count 'non-street legal cars,' so technically it's Thrust SSC, a twin turbofan powered land-bound missile with a pilot that went 763 mph at Black Rock in 1997 and broke the sound barrier in the process.
The last wheel-driven car to hold the Land Speed Record was the Sommers Brothers' Goldenrod, which ran 409 mph on Utah's Bonneville Salt Falts in 1965. It was on display for a long time at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles.
In spite of claims made in behalf of a number of cars that have yet to be seen, much less driven by unbiased testers, the fastest car you can buy for use on public roads is the €1.0M Bugatti Yeyron, which has been clocked at 253 mph. You need to turn a special key to lock the suspension down and the aerodynamic aids in a less drag-inducing configuration, and if you turn the wheel too sharply, they all go back to the default setting, limiting top speed to a mere 234 mph. If you hurry, there are still a few production slots available.

The fastest car in the world as of 2014 is a Hennessey venom doing a speed of 270 mph compare to the bugatti veyrons 268. Statistically speaking the venom can go 272 miles per hour.

Check out the California Timing and Scoreing web site. And Bonneville Salt flats UT. There are wheel driven piston engined cars that can top 450 miles an hour. Jet cars have broken the sound barrier 630 miles an hour. Each year records fall.

I have a srong feeling it is a tie between the now defunct "le car" and the "Yugo". Both were rubber burning monster machines...or not.
