When I face my fears from the past, I have terrible flashbacks that leave me emotionally paralized for days.?

I am in therapy and at my next session I can work through this, but what do I do in between when I am frozen with fear?

    It sounds to me like you may be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. It's common in people who have been through traumatic events in their lives (ie- rape, war, physical abuse, etc.) When overwhelming or highly stressful events happen, we tend to shut them out as a means of dealing, but eventually our minds force us to deal with them directly, which may account for the flashbacks. My suggestion is take a deep breath, remind yourself that these are things that have happened already and won't happen again. Picture yourself someplace safe and protected, listen to calming music, or even start a journal to work through what you've had flashbacks about. Seeing a therapist is a good way to deal but during the times where they are unavailable to you, you need to find something that is calming. Good luck. You can make it through this.

    Like the other answerer said, try breathing exercises, and maybe meditation. Some kind of physical activity would probably help too, since it can help raise your hormone (endorphins) levels and make you feel less stressed. You didn't say what you are having a flashback about, but it must have been bad. Try doing something that empowers you to conquer whatever it was. If you were assaulted someway, then take a karate or self defense class. If your house burned down, then take some steps to ensure your safety like checking the smoke detectors, etc. You get the idea.

    Edit: on your next visit ask your therapist for some strategies to help you cope with the flashbacks.

    I think the above is good advice. In addition if you do start to calm down start thinking about something that interests you and can keep you busy. If possible read a book, there is nothing that keeps your mind off things more than a book, and if you can get one that interests you.

    breathe...count the breaths you take...slow them...breathe some more...i am being very serious here...it does help
