make sure you have proof that you would not want to stay in the States, for example a promising job that you would want to return to, family (kids, a wife/husbanc) house that you make payments on...etc

When you apply for a visitor's visa, they generally want to be sure that you are not likely to break the terms of your visa and stay in America once the visa runs out. Generally, you might visit the US consulate in your country, and the assistant consul will ask you about your current life - your job, your family, where you live, what you intend to do in the US, etc. Sometimes they even check how much money you have in a savings account at a bank in your country.
Your chances are better if you have proof that you will return to your home country (you have a family to support, you have a steady job, etc). It also helps A LOT if you can have someone who lives in the US sponsor you. When they do that, they basically take responsibility for you while you are in the US, and it is their responsibility to make sure you return when your visa is up.
Good luck!
I am not sure how the rules work specifically with regard to South Africa, I have more experience with visitors visas for people from Eastern Europe, but the general idea is pretty much the same regardless of area.

Like the others said you need to prove that you won't stay in the United States, like a job and family and all the things they mentioned and hopefully if you know someone that lives in the US, they can write a letter saying that they invite you to come visit. If you're a young adult it's less likely that they will let you go, because my cousin wanted to come and visit me here in the States with my mom but they denied her visa but approved my mom's. Both my mom and my cousin had proof of a job, family and a letter from my friends here in the States saying they could come visit, but my cousin was denied. Good Luck.

If the person has dual citizenship then don't use their African Passport. We even need medical clearance to get into Cambodia, Having an African passport is laughable. I think EU countries get 90days free.
Personally I don't feel comfortable investing in equipment and financial investments in a country where I am not welcome. I feel that the new immigration laws have played a huge roll in the current slump in the US economy.

Having a family member living State side as a reference is good since that is a verifiable destination. Don't become an illegal immigrant.

Nothing mate. Please don't be mislead. Go for a week or so to Congo or anywhere where there is a US consulate [outside SA] and apply from there. No waiting lists, no funny rubbish like they screen you from within SA.
Think the US consulates have certain quotas they may allow and that buggers everything.

you need to proove that you have a job or a family at home. Show enough money to support your stay there. Also its better to have a letter of invitation from someone who lives there already.
