Is the title Md in east Indian society something like Mister and Master in our west?

I want to know what the Md "title" at the front of a male name actually represents in east Indian society/culture. Then what does it translate into in western/English/American culture.

(Please, no references to medical doctor abbreviation(s).)

I have noticed mostly Muslims using MD at the front of their names as you have mentioned. It is not a title. I believe it is the abbreviated form for Mohamed.

I never heard of it. Can you give an example? What part of India?
