I think it is to mark the lifting of the Siege of Derry of 1689

There are several bonfire nights in Northern Ireland, and all are sectarian.
There is the 11th July, eve of the 12th, celebrating the Battle of the Boyne - associated with the Orange Order.
In Derry also, there is the 11th August, and Lundy Day in December, where they celebrate the Siege of Derry - associated with the Apprentice Boys of Derry.

Bonfires are a celtic pagan tradition,
Church adopted them to alow ease of integration for the native pagans,
Bonfires are a means of celebration through out the whole island of ireland both north and south.
Bonfires are lit for weddings , local sports celebrations, religious occasions.
It is one thing (tradition) that both communities have in common even if the purpose for the bonfire differs.

Bonfires on August 15th coinside with the AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians), who have a March on this day as its a very Holy day for Many Catholics. August 15th is feast day of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.
