What effect does smoking have on the balance of oxygen & carbon dioxide in the body (lungs, bloodstream)?

I want to know if smoking raises or lowers carbon dioxide relative to oxygen. For example, does smoking a single cigarette raise or lower carbon dioxide? Does it effect the actual ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide? Please - no anti-smoking rants or "smoking is bad for you" generalities - what I need is an answer to this specific question please. Thanks!

I am sure you have seen the oxygen meters that the doctor places in your finger to measure oxygen levels in your system. I have one, some friends of mine and I did an experiment with it. I do not smoke, they do. We measured their oxygen levels before and after they smoked a cigarette. All of their oxygen levels decreased by at least 1 point directly after smoking.

I'm so sorry but this is not a topic I know much about. My father while in his later Alzheimer stages smoked four packs a day - sometimes even two or three in the ashtray at once. My whole family spent a lifetime trying to help him quit. I nor anyone else in my family have ever smoked. If I knew? I would help! So sorry! Good luck!
