Your mate is right, Dave Grohl was a drummer for Nirvana and started the Foo Fighters after Kurt Kobain committed suicide.

Yes your mate is correct in saying that , he was also the drummer for Queens Of The Stone Age for a short period .

yes it is true. Dave grohl started the foo fighters(named after an American 50's unit looking into UFOs')after the end of nirvana.he is a great drummer, also drumming for queens of the stone age,and tenacious d(and playing the devil in the film)
he has been on guitar/vocals for the foos' for 13yrs now.
he (deservedly) has the tag"the nicest man in rock" and most people who have ever met him will agree he is a great guy.(as you can tell,I'm a big fan) after going by chance to one of their gigs a few years ago.-and I'm not a kid,but a 39yr-old truck driver, who appreciates talent and humility.

Yep, it true. He was just the drummer back then and didn't do much singing. Now he's lead of his own band (kinda like Phil Collins) and did some drumming w/Queens of the StoneAge and NIN.
