Generally, early October in Chicago is beautiful. But come prepared, of course. It could be a little chilly so you want a light jacket and/or sweater for the evening and maybe during the day. Mostly, it won't be too hot either. Layers work so you can put something extra on or dress in a little less.
There are hundreds of things to do in Chicago! Depends on your interests. Navy Pier is good for part of a day, though parking is expensive. The Museum of Science and Industry is fascinating - lots of great exhibits on different subjects. There is the Art Institute, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Second City (where many famous comics/actors got their start), the smaller but fun Comedy Sportz, Blue Man Group, Chinatown, great plays, a variety of interesting boat and land tours, lots of shopping from the unique to expensive, plenty of variety in price and type of restaurants.
Batavia is around an hour almost straight west of Chicago, depending on traffic.

Early Oct is a GREAT time to be in Chicago. Nice weather and the summer crowds are gone. Pack long-sleeved shirts and sweatshirts. It is NOT cold out yet, cold comes later in the month or Nov. Bring an umbrella if you want.
What to see and do...youre staying near Navy Pier so youre probably going there. Dont spend a whole day there, there are too many better things to do in Chicago.
Like the museums..the Field Museum and near that is the Shedd Aquarium.
Dont miss the lakefront parks like Grant Park and Millennium Park. See the fountains and The Bean and enjoy the views of Chicago. And walk over to the Art Institute after you see Millennium.
Shopping?...well N. Michigan Ave is loaded with expensive shops.. State St has shopping too.
Lincoln Park Zoo..look on a map and youll see its north of the attractions I've mentioned. Lincoln Park is one of the nicest areas in Chicago, you can walk around after youve done the zoo.
Are you old enough to drink?..you can hit the bars n' clubs of ' Rush Street.' Look for Rush St on a map, its in the Near North/River North area.
Spend an afternoon in Chinatown, a safe area, have lunch and walk around.
For eating...Ed Debevics is lots of fun, its a 50's type diner. Pizza at Ginos East. Garretts Popcorn. Greektown for dinner. For fancy pants dining, Gibsons and Gene n' Georgettis are popular.

Chicago is a wonderful combination of arts, architecture
and American life. A good orientation point is the
Chicago Cultural Center, 77 East Randolph, which
occupies an entire block and contains the Chicago
Office of Tourism. Originally built as a library and
completed in 1897, it provides a good introduction to
the city's architectural heritage. The building itself is
grand, with the world's largest Tiffany dome and three
floors (joined by a great staircase) of beautiful rooms
with displays and information.
The weather is cold.

October is on the end of the rainy season. While its subject to rain at any time, that does not mean it will rain all the time. For example I was visiting here in 2003 and the last two weeks of October saw rain 3 times. the same time frame in 2005 saw rain daily. It is still a great place to visit and a good time too. The high season starts in November.

Bring shorts, and short sleeve shirts, also just incase bring a sweater. Make sure your bring a bottle of water, when ever you go somewhere. Things to see... I would recomend everything, but you should see the Sears Tower, or the John hancock building, or even stay on the beach. Just pick-up a travel-guide for Illinois. ^_^
