My sister is going into the Air Force?

She's leaving Sept. 11 to San Antonio for BMT.

When will she first be able to call? Is she allowed to send e-mails? And when will she be able to come home for a few days?

She should call within the first few days but only for about 30 seconds so she can give you her mailing address. There is no email contact but only letters through the mail. If she recieves another phone call during basic training depends on her TI. I only got one phone call the entire time I was in basic. After basic she will go straight to tech school and can not come home until she graduates there or during the holiday season.

Unless things have changed dramatically since I went through Basic Training in San Antonio she will be be given calling privileges shortly after she arrives. Maybe not REAL soon but soon.

As far as being able to come home for a few days: chances are not until she graduates from Tech School.

I'm sure she will keep in touch with you through letters and such. I don't know if she'll have access to the internet while there or not.

Ask her to keep you posted and she will probably let you know when it's ok for you and your family to come down and pay a visit. Perhaps close to her graduating date. They do get a day pass to San Antonio and that would be a good time.

    Best of luck!

And tell her I said "Thank You!" for serving her country.

When I went through Basic we were allowed a phone call in our zero week perhaps the saturday or sunday after we got to Basic. The phone call was just long enough for us to give them our addresses and let them know we were ok. We had MTIs in the background yelling at us to get off the phones... However, as the weeks went by, we started receiving phone call priviledges as rewards for passing inspections and what not. She will not be able to email you while at Basic. The best thing you can do for her, is mail her something everyday. Even if you have nothing to talk about except the weather, receiving mail everyday makes you feel normal and reminds you that the real world is still out there. When she goes to techschool depending on how long it is, she will not be coming home for a visit unless her tech school runs through Christmastime and she is allowed 2 weeks for Christmas Exodus. For example, I went to basic in January, my techschool graduated in September. I did not get to go home to visit my family during that entire 9 mths, however, they were allowed to come visit me in tech school and bring my car to me. Just remember the most important thing is to be supportive, it will be alot to handle at first but she will get through it!
