I was wondering why the people of the UK always seem so bitter towards the US?

I am a Texan, and proud of the heritage we have here, in my state as well as the US. My ancestors were from the UK, mostly English with some Scot and Irish in the mix. I enjoy many of the things about the UK. I study British history, read the literature and understand that you have a great heritage.

The US is a young country and has grown quickly in size, wealth and power and therefore acts and is like a spoiled child. But unfortunately we are after all Britain's spoiled child.

I have many friends here who have immigrated from the UK, and have other friends who have either come to the US or are currently here as a result of their service with the RAF or British Army. We always find a lot in common.

By the way I thought it was really cool driving my Jaguars, now I find out they are made by Ford.

Update:

As far as Bush goes our presidents are like toilet paper, they get used and thrown away. We don't sit around the US complaining about Thatcher, Major and Brown.

Update 2:

Mrs. M....I have not been to the UK... though I had reservations to spend one of my lolidays there last year, health issues forced me to cancel the trip. I have been outside the US on numerous visits to other countries and lived in Honduras for a while doing medical assistance for the government. I enjoy seeing other cultures, and travel outside the US at least once a year. Just had my plans for England squashed at the last min.

Try not to take too much notice of the nation bashers. Fortunately there is a wide range of people who use this site, that is after all the point. The unfortunate thing is there are those who feel it is necessary to critisize and condem that which they do not understand. They are, I hope in the minority and need to be given no heed.

I am a Brit who now lives in Colorado and do my best to comment with an alternative point of view when I see the nation bashers with their asinine comments.

As I say, don't take too much notice, we have to feel sorry for the uninformed, don't we?

I'm an American. In the two years I lived in the UK (in Kent, about 50 kms east of London), I saw VERY little anti-American sentiment. I was completely comfortable living there. Most people in the small town where I lived were curious about the US and remembered what America did for them during and after WW2. My ex-wife, who is a Brit, is now on the road to becoming an American citizen.

YA and the mainstream media are not accurate reflections of the sentiments of most people in any nation. The people here who hate the US are generally not amenable to reason; but we should still be reasonable with them.

    I speak fluent British! Oi!

You hit the nail on the head when you said you have studied British history, you have UK ancestors and have looked into our heritage but you have never actually been. Americans rarely travel outside their own country so you have never seen Europe at first hand. I however have been to the states several times and in fact travelled world wide. For this reason I tend to appreciate other cultures without the need to 'brag' about my home land or indeed the need to compare.

I'm not bitter towards the US, I've enjoyed my visits and the friends I've made, however Americans are not particular well liked mainly because of your government and the fact you have a man in charge who is stupid. You also have the tendency of thinking you are greater than the rest of us, which is actually very untrue.

I can only suggest you try travel.

I am not bitter towards our US cousins. I have many in my contacts and as friends on my 360 page. I like Americans despite the fact that my horrendous psycho of an ex-husband was American!

But I do admit to using my peculiar sense of humour to wind them up on rare occasions!

Because the United Kingdom is irrelevant in terms of world power and prestige today. California alone has a larger gdp than the U.K. does, and certainly - in some senses - enjoys a higher standard of living.

I really don't think most of us are.

Certainly George Bush is pretty much disliked here - but I'm sure he is over most of the world.

There is a pretty vocal minority on here who are anti US but it's not the majority, not that I've seen
