I've seen that when you copy the desktop to all users, it'll duplicate what you have. But I've never seen it appear and then just disappear, but since programs can conflict with other programs easily - it doesn't matter what your friends pc did, because they might have different apps than you. You can look at your C:\Documents and Settings\All users, see if your icons are showing there, if so you can delete them to prevent the duplicate icons if they show up again.
Does your Windows XP look more like the Classic version now, if you have your pc set to let Windows control your performance it might have changed your settings. You can look at that by right clicking My Computer, select Properties, Advanced tab, Peformance, Visual Effects - if you change it to best appearance. Or if you want you could just go to your desktop and rt click on the background and select Properties, then click on the Appearance tab and make sure Windows XP style. Hope this helps :)
