The great majority of deaths caused by hurricanes (and other tropical cyclones) are a result of inland flooding. The storm surge and high winds are usually limited to a narrow area along the coast where the eye moves inland, but the flooding can devastate widespread areas well inland. Exceptions might be in highly populated, low lying coastal areas like Bangladesh where hundreds of thousands live.

  • Storm surge is responsible for nearly 90% of all hurricane-related deaths and injuries.
