What would cause holes in my yard?

There are dime-sized holes all over our back yard. The grass is dead in about a 3 inch radius around the hole. We live in central Ohio, and it isn't our year for the 17-year cicadias. The holes are too small for moles or gophers and there's no raised ground or other damage around the hole. It isn't digging like a squirrel would do, either. Could it be insects or grubs or spiders of some kind? I've never seen anything go in or out of the hole. I am baffled.

Could bre locusts or cicadias; We are in Mo and it isn*t our year for them either, but we got them anyway.

Grubs will also bore holes. Can you dig up a shovelful and see what you might find? If it is grubs or snails, I heard if you put beer out they come out and drink it at night and die. No kidding.

We had some variety of animal making holes and tunnels around our backyard a pair years in the past. I examine that putting used cat muddle into the hollow works because of the fact the animals do in comparison to yet another animal being of their area so we merely positioned slightly of our cat's used muddle down into all of the holes and it went away and on no account got here decrease back. We lived there for 2 years after that and on no account had yet another subject. i think of this works no count what the animal is it is inflicting the holes.

It not only could be grubs, but also ants! I have an over abundance of ants in my yard this year and they make the sort of holes you describe and then hide where you can't see them until certain times of the day! Get a good pesticide and spray the area, good luck!

It could be snakes, but I wouldn't hold me to that answer. Your best bet would be to go to your local garden center and ask them about it. They would probably know more than I would.

Crawfish probably. If you have crawfish up there ...
