In Montana, moose and elk are in the rut roughly from mid-September to mid-October and the rut for deer is in the November time-frame. http://fwp.mt.gov/news/article_3928.aspx

In the northern parts of the US, mid to late September is the usual time for the elk rutting season.

This next site mentions that in Montana, the end of the third week is their peak rutting time:

What does this have to do with fishing. But I think it starts in the fall. Late October.
