Why don't they send a tethered robot down the mine in Utah?

They have robots on mars roaming around and beaming back pictures. Why in the heck can't they send a tethered robot with light and camera 1500 feet down in a hole to beter survey the situation? It seems lame that they just send down on light and a camera to only see 20' away from the bore-hole. From my arm chair it seems lame anyhow.

Update:

I thought one of the bore-holes was 9" in diameter and others were like 2-1/2". 9" is huge in terms of wheeled robots. Seems like you could send a robot down the 9" diameter hole and have it travel from cavern to cavern. The robotic car wouldn't even need batteries because it would be tethered.

I stay in a boomin section for Coal Mines, i became interior the Strike of '89 and many times save up with something that has to do with miners. Coming from an prolonged historic previous of miners, and Being involed and employed by skill of the UMWA. I for one am very dishearted at MSHA that they might enable that lots lower back mining happen, it became a collaspe waiting to happen. Now that there has been yet another twist of destiny I heavily doubt that there is any existence under the chilly darkish floor. I pray each evening that i'm incorrect. yet MSHA could have carried out better. I do have self assurance strongly interior the UMWA i think that maximum union mines are safer than those of non-union (against ideals of Murray) For the uncomplicated motives that the Union became geared up on the assumption of coming up it safer for miners to do their jobs. in case you paintings in a mines that's not union and you have a situation Who do you're taking it to? the owner that should could placed out funds to restoration the concern, and is well-known with that there is somebody it is waiting to take your pastime so they dont could hear to you. while in case you have the Union to lower back you, you have alot greater thoughts that in the event that they don't persist with the contract and the guidelines stated with in there could properly be a STRIKE and that they injury the criminal checklist that they agreed to. UTAH NON UNION SAGO NON UNION what does that tell the folk

Well, first you have to have a hole big enough to send in the robot...which they don't. That takes even more time, so let's say they bore a hole large enough to send down the robot...and it's the wrong cavern. Remember, they have been boring into more than one cavern. So then they have to start over. They said that if they ever found the right cavern with them in it, they'd expand the hole and send down a "capsule" to pull them up through the hole one-at-a-time.

So your theory sounds good from the armchair, but not too feasible...I'm guessing...from my armchair.

I think that as Americans we sometimes have our priorities in the wrong place and this is one of them.

We would rather spend money looking at planets that we know pretty much everything about already than saving men that are possibly buried alive...how sad!

    Good question.

It is sad that they are giving up on the miners.
