V6 VW Passat Problems?

When this car was purchased I was told it had a timing issue, So, I went to try to adjust the timing but there is no distributor, so how do you adjust the timing? Also, maybe it is not a timing issue how do you know if your car just might need transmission fluid?

Update:

It is a 95 VW Passat Wagon. It has the same engine as the V6 Jetta of that year. When I hit on the gas petal I basically have to push it all the way to the floor in order to get it to go. Which I shouldn't have to do that, Then it seems to take too long shifting gears like it is hanging on to first gear. So, then I figured that I might have to check the Transmission fluid, since that is put in a horrible spot maybe the last person that had the car never checked it right or something.

The timing issue might be related to the timing chain or the tensioner on the timing chain. There are two different V6 engines that were offered in the Passat, and depending on the year of the car it's either the VR6 or 30V V6 engine. So parts and problems vary according to the engine you have in your car. List some more specifics such as year and mileage on your car and the symptoms so that someone might help a little more. Timing chain issues are relatively rare until you reach well over 100,000 miles. In addition, there are also several VW enthusiast sites online that could also be of use to you.
