Am I to old?

I am 30 years old and am in college for the first time. I am interested in vocal music and theater, but I have never taken any kind of music or theater in my life. Am I to old to start this now? How will I be recieved? Will the instructor want to take on someone with absolutely no training? I need advice.

I'm surprised to hear this question from a 30 year-old going to college for the first time. I think it would take a lot of self confidence to start college at 30 and that should carry over to all things in your life. Take the classes and have fun doing it!

First, I would tell you to give it a try. You probably will have to audition, so just do your thing so they can see what natural talent you have. Universities/colleges vary. Sometimes a beginner is just given a 30 minute less while a major gets a 60 minute one. You may be told to register for a particular group class and not a performing ensemble known on campus. Hang in there long enough to find out the rules or procedures, then see if you like it. If going to another school is not an option, then it may be their way or nothing.

Someone like you wrote to Dear Abby years ago - her kids were out of the house, and she wanted to go to medical school - had the grades, had enough money to start, etc. She said "Abby in 8 years, when I am done, I will be FORTY!!" Abby's answer - "How old will you be in 8 years if you DON'T go to medical school?""

Grab the opportunity, honey. Many kids wash out early - they are in college because it is expected, and they have NO CLUE. You vocal instructor will not have to deal with a whole bunch of things that we do with kids, because you are more experienced and mature.

I really don't think you are two old. I know someone who has just started training to be a doctor at 40 years of age, she will be 47 by the time she has qualified. I'm older than you and I'm thinking of learning to play the piano. Education is a lifelong process.

I think that if your interested in it, do it. I have the same dream and I want to be a broadway dancer/singer and I'm just a teen. If the instructor wants to have good students sometimes they don't always have to have training. It's always good to start something new?

Not at all! I was a music major in college and there were quite a few "adults" in the same program I was in. They were loved just the same and some of them became dear friends of mine. Follow your heart for sure and know that you are NOT the only one out there. Good luck!

Your never too old to old to learn anything that you want to learn. Teachers will teach anyone who wants to learn if they have talent and the only way that their going to find that out is hear you sing and if they think you have possibility's I'm sure that they would teach you, no problem. Call a music store or private teacher and ask !

I started later than that, and have had even older people in my classes. It's your attitude that will count, and older students are often more serious and disciplined. My teachers are my age and older and we get along great. Good luck.

No, you are not too old, provided you are doing this for your own enjoyment and not depending on this for your bread and butter (which I would say to any one of any age)
