    ONE WAY TO DO IT

On google.com, just look for "free resume builder", there are tons and more coming out all the time. You are really the only person that can tell if you like a service. Download.com has a few programs you can download, but you need to watch out for the one's that act like they are free and then load you up with ads to get you to purchase services.

However, Microsoft Word works just fine, actually better and you have more control than most online tools.

    HERE IS THE REAL ANSWER

When I got out of the military I paid a service to create my first resume - I wasted more time and money just telling them what to do and where they needed to make it look better.

You are your own best "Free Resume Builder". If you use templates, they will stick out like a sore thumb to any knowledgeable HR person, they just don't work right for the person who is motivated and wants to land a good job. Your resume needs to fit your skills and each and every resume you build needs to cover every skill listed in the job posting.

The best way to build your resume is to see who has a good resume and follow the pattern. Search for other resumes online in your field - MP, I assume you may be going into law enforcement so look for "best law enforcement resumes". If not law, just look for 5-10 good resumes in your new career field, study them, find out why others rate them with high scores.

I also recommend that you go to the local "career center", they have free help in building your resumes, how to interview, write a cover letter, what clothes to wear, and tips to beat the other guy to the job.

A good resume will not get you the job, your first job is to get the interview. A boilerplate resume made for all job postings will leave you frustrated. Work at it it, make your own customized resume for each listing, and with your military experience you should get hired if you are prepared.

    Good Luck!! vark114

Besides setting all margins to 1", the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is "scanability." Here are some helpful tips: 1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as "Confidential Resume,"Do Not Contact Current Employer," etc. 2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer; 3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned; 4. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.; 5. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left; 6. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly; 7. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues; 8. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase; 9. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc. In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries. Good luck!

    Here's a couple of suggestions:

    1) Most word processing programs, like Microsoft Word, have a resume template in them. If you go to create a new file, you should be given the option to use a template. That will get you started on formats and give you an idea of what type of information to include.

    2) www.monster.com is free and has a resume builder available on it. Its a step by step walk through so its easy to get through and prompts you through all the information you will need to include.

    Good luck!

Writing your own resume can be very difficult because it's hard to understand what a hiring manager wants to see. A template can help your resume look pretty but it won't help you write engaging, confident content. You may want to hire a place like Executive Drafts (www.executivedrafts.com). Spending a little money up front to get a professional's help will pay off in the long run.

I have two sites up right now with some good information on writing your own resume. This is not difficult if you have some basic guidelines. You don't need to get fancy and writing your own helps you build a skill that is generally transferable to the workplace. I have reviewed tons of resumes and it's not always the fancy ones that get the call back - those that are consistent and sell the candidate are the ones that get selected for personal interviews. It also helps to follow up on your resume - don't get obsessive about calling - call once - maybe twice if it has been some time - it tells the employer you WANT the job (which is more than many candidates) but like I said - don't get too pushy. I don't know of anywhere that you can get them for free, but they are not that expensive. I recommend that you go to somewhere like bestbuy or office depot, or any office supply and purchase one. They are only like 9.99-19.99 and are really good. I personally use them to tailor my resume depending on which field I am applying for. They are really good for organizing your information and applying it to a professional format. Most of them even suggest how you should format your resume depending on how much experience you have in the position you are applying for.
