Why has Jodie Foster chosen such mediocre roles?

Partly because there just isn't all that much out there for women in general, much less women over 35 who don't just want to be some guys wife or girlfriend....name one recently released. Also I think she has become more interested in Producing and Directing. Not sure if that is due to crappy roles or that she's been doing this for so long that she's not as interested in Acting.

She was once lovable in "Freaky friday" (the fashioned) A bit unnerving in "Taxi motive force" with Robert Deniro Excellent in "Accused" Heart touching in "Nell" with Liam Neeson Tough in "The Brave one" and "panic room" Talented in "Anna and the King" however i am definite she's going to consistently be identified for her function in "Silence of the lambs" with Anthony Hopkins I'm now not definite if she is simply provided her those roles on the grounds that who she is or simply defines the jobs for which she performs. However, I have no idea of one more actress that has labored with a higher proficiency of actors dwelling than Jodie Foster. Great scripts mostly draw in the higher actors.

The movies coming out are really declining in calibur so there arent as many good roles out there.

those movies did show her talent and she is rich enough that she can do roles she likes instead of worrying about money or status
