Why do criminals have a crewcut or bald head after entering prison?
I have noticed that when male criminals are on trial they have a regular hair style and then when they are convicted and put in prison they have either a really close crewcut or a completely shaved head? Why is this?

Hair care cost money even in the joint. I have worked for one jail where hairclippers were lent out to inmates. Inmates can purchase shampoo, conditioner, hair gel etc from the commissary. If you shave your head every week you spend less money on hair care products. Besides, if you are a guy surrounded by guys, who are you trying to look good for?
