Is it safe to drive an hour with a broken fan belt?

Depends on how hot it is. If it is not real hot, above 80-85 you should be ok. Don't run the AC and closely watch your temperature gauge. If it starts getting too high pull over or go into a rest stop and let the engine cool down...pop the hood to let the heat out. DO NOT take off the radiator cap or you'll get burnt. Drive normal speed and the air flow from moving will help keep the engine cool. If you get stuck in heavy or stopped traffic turn the car off. You'll be oK

Belt runs fan. Fan cools engine. Engine gets too hot. Blow out crank case. Motor broken. Literally.
If you run into this type of situation in an emergency, and you see that heat light going nuts, say in the desert, mountains, or where you can absolutely NOT pull off the road, turn your heater on FULL BLAST.
You'll totally die from the heat, but it also will relieve your engine of some of its heat for a fair while. Do not run an AC and open the windows so that you may live.
Get off the road, and start showing your girlfriend's legs for a ride down the road.
A cracked block is the death of an automobile, and this method can save it for a few seconds.
When in shop, check all gaskets, seals, and your heart rate. The heater method can save your car, and make a few miles to a safer place.

well if your ac compressor has a separate belt take it off the only thing is you don't have ac anymore yes if the pulley is seized you will fry the belt it will break and you will see it bouncing down the road behind you in your rear view mirror when it snaps hopefully cross your finger it will not get caught up in the other belt derailing them causing damage to alternator or serpentine belts then at that point your car will die if you have no belts no go simply put it can do a lot of damage or it could do no damage you say you mechanic said it was 300 hundred to replace an 8 dollar part this is the second time some has quoted Firestone charging was to much your being =ROBBED BY FIRE STONE it doesn't cost no 300 bucks to replace a belt and it sure in the hell don't cost 500 in labor to replace a compressor 3-4 bolts hold it on the belt has to be removed is part of the compressor replacement if Firestone quoted you separately it called ROBBERY Your getting ripped off what i would do if i were you is call auto parts store find out what the new compressor costs retail or you can find your car in a junk your that was wrecked from the rear end and buy the used compressor get a new price numbers before you get a used one a lot of junk yard over charge you can generally get a new one put it in yourself the compressor is right on top of the motor couple of bolts and belt the only thing is depending one where you you live you will have to have a licensed ac specialist to bleed purge and refill with freon the reasons being freon is bad for the ozone and the average Joe is not qualified to mess with the system what ever you do get other opinions other than fire stone they are one of the biggest rip off company around i should know i used to work for them but i got tired of them ripping people off so i gave up get a second mechanic to look at it in the mean time remove the belt for the compressor all together the only bad thing out of that is no ac but you don't have it anyways. hope this helps Lr

It depends on what that belt powers.
If it is the water pump-no way. The engine will overheat and then the heads might warp as well as blowing a head gasket.
If it powers only other accessories (power steering, AC) then yes. Provided you can steer with out power steering.
If the alternator is on the broken belt the car will eventually stop running due to a dead battery. Which will need a complete recharge to keep from ruining the charging system.

300 is extremely high to replace belt on an escort as for a new compessor and recharging it 1100 probably isnt that bad for having someone do it you could probably get used compressor fron salvage yard and do it yourself for a couple hundred its not that hard or go with reman parts and do it yourself for half of that if your wanting to go the cheapest route i would put on used compressor a belt and recharge it yourself for approx 250

No, fan belt assists air through radiator.
Without it your engine will overheat. Possibly even explode.

Definitely not. In a short space of time [or distance] your vehicle's engine will overheat, resulting in a blown head gasket or worse, a seized engine.

You are not likely to get that far as the alternator is driven by the fanbelt. you'll run out of electrics on a petrol car. That is apart from possible overheating
