Information on Cadwalader family in Philadelphia?

James Campbell of Scotland married one Christian Cadwallader of Philadelphia, ca. 1735. Looking for background info on the Cadwallader line. Would like to hear from anone knowing about this family. Christian and James moved to NC and both died and were buried in Wilmington. I have info on their descendants, but not her forebears.

Many of the Cadwalader family name claim welsh ancestry. Do a google search for Cadwalader family history and you get a few good sites to start with. Also, try Cyndislist for family histories. The suggestion to work with primary documents is excellent - once you have the birthplace, try looking for old church/parish records, wills, or probate inventories. Ship manifests are also helpful to see when Cadwaladers came to the colonies - see Olive Tree genealogy for ships lists

I know this is not an exact answer, but in the early 18th century, there were no census records or official state records - it makes it tough to find.

    Also, have you seen

    - Milton Rubincam, "The Cadwalader family; a concise genealogy, 1543-1850." Published in West Hyattsville, Md.,1963.

    - Sandra L. Cadwalader, "The Cadwaladers, 1677-1879 : five generations of a Philadelphia family", published in Wawa, Pa.: S.L. Cadwalader, 1996.

    - The Argyll ColonyPlus, Vol 2 No. 1 Winter 1987. It has The James Campbell – Christian Cadwallader Family as one of its articles.

    Other places to start....

There is a John Cadwalader who appears in Philadelphia in 1719, as witness on a will. You could use his name to see if there are other family members listed.

There are also Cadwaladers in Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia Co., PA around the 1715 time frame. They eventually changed their name to Roberts, but the original Welsh family name was Robert Cadwalader.

There is a Cadwalader family who moved to Uwchlan, Pennsylvania around 1712, when Christian was supposed to have been born.

You'll have to start researching primary documents for clues. I can't find anything on her lineage on the internet, not even from local biographies. There were several possible sets of parents, but nothing tying her to any of them.

The places to start will be marriage registers, wills, land records, church records (particularly if you can find the record of their marriage in a church ledger). It's obvious that if she were born in Pennsylvania, then there will be a record of her parents somewhere...it's just not on the internet for easy finding. I don't know where you live, but a few days at the Pennsylvania State Archives is really the best next step for you.
