Hmm definitely good Question u have, ever since the GST (govt service tax) went up... i started to think about the future Singaporean, speshlee the one born in SIngapore like myself, when education also they started to seperate, to make the clever mix with the clever the stupid mix with the stupid.
Poor also have to struggle for their life, just look those who sold stuffs at the Sungei Road, some singaporean also gone crazy.... they look young, but they asked money from the old...
How long will Singaporean stand to support the govt tax? i cant imagine, staying another 20yrs here...
Singapore are modest and for the richest people, who came here to work, not to be the nationality.

That depends on what you consider to be "rich". Citizens here are mostly from middle income family, making enough to lead a comfortable life and putting their kids to school.
Although the living costs is rising, if you do a research, it is still relatively low compared to other countries in Asia like for example, Japan. And not to mention Singapore has one of the world's lowest inflation rate.
As to where the poor stand, the government has basically "paved" a road for the young citizens to get educated. From primary school to graduating with a diploma or a degree and ultimately landing a stable job and living a comfortable life. So, if you choose to take the road less traveled and not get educated, you can't really complaint about being poor.
Edit: Interesting question you've brought up by the way :)

No. There's not much of people who are filthy rich in Singapore. Mostly is just middle class. Who live and eat in proper conditions. There's no beggars on the street only because it is illegal to beg in Singapore. That is why you see those poor selling tissues and stuff on the streets. The government do have schemes to help the poor. It's a matter of how "proud" the poor is. Some people are so proud that they would never go to the government for help. Why did the rich get rich? They get rich because they are hardworking. They work hard to get where they are today earning big bucks. How many people actually get rich winning lottery? Not everyone who carries branded bags are rich. They carry branded bags because they scrimp and save to buy that bag. All our forefathers came to Singapore poor. It's their hardworking attitude and never say die attitude. And people only think Singaporeans are rich because our dollar is the highest in value in Asia.

In Singapore, without Education especially N or O level cert, you won't get a good job. I agree from some of them. Mostly Singaporeans are middle class where they get a proper home to live and eat.
And if you are poor in Singapore, than don't give up and keep hardworking and hardworking. Not by sitting one corner and do nothing.
And now, the current young generation must STUDY hard so we get a proper job and not to beg. Ok? :D cheers to all of u!

Just like me. Staying in J.B but got a work permit to work in S'pore. But I was doing that for 20 years. Every early-morning ride my bike to Causeway. Kept in a long trafic jam, inhale smokes from other vehicles. And waiting for 1 1/2 hour to clear 10,000 bikes and other vehicle. Thats where and what the poor stand and do.
Rich ones just got money. Their eye$ just have a S$ or $$$ printed on it. Some of them is a $ucker. Which is ' No money, No talk' Rising cost??? Naahh, for them??? Rise only mah.
