If this is an automatic car, you probably have shift-linkage or cable problems.

If this is a manual transmission car, either you have some problems with the shifter, the linkage between the shifter and the transmission, or you may have internal problems in the trans with either the shift-forks or have the gears locked up.

I take it this is a stickshift?

If so can you shift from first to third and skip second? Or is the thing physically stuck - locked into first gear and wont go into any other gear?

Regardless, you have transmission problems. Either find a friend who does heavy mechanical work or get it towed to a shop.

Not much info here to go on....If it's an auto...check the governor valve for being stuck and if a manual...check the linkage and the shifter for being jammed or stuck.

if this is an auto. trans. I would suggest speed sensors bad if you could get it scaned you would know for sure.
