Five, I ran billions of virus scans with like four different virus/spyware scanners, still doesnt work
Is there any other reason why the internet doesnt want to work on my computer, before I spend more money on stuff I don't need...
I did all of those (computer i/t for 5 years)...but i got it working though...for some reason, it just started working...dont know y?

If getting an IP address through the other suggestions, go into IE. Select Tools/Internet Options/Communication. Run a set up using the box on the upper right. Do it as a stand alone computer manually and skip the step to create a disk or file. When finished reopen the Communications and on the bottom is a Lan Settings. Open this and make sure no boxes are selected, even the automatic, and OK out. Close and reopen IE. One thing that is easy to do is not seat the cable fully in the card. It catches on the card seperator edge and does not fully lock.

If you are connected to the MODEM by an ethernet cable You do have a router it is incorporated in the MODEM.
As another answerer suggested check your IP with ipconfig /all.
Are you connecting the laptop through your MODEM?
If you are check its IP address with ipconfig and set your desktop to the next IP so if laptop is 192.168.0.2 set desktop to 192.168.0.3 . The first three number are the same also make sure the gateway address is the same.
Otherwise I would suggest re-asking your question and mention the make and model of your MODEM or possibly email me.

Click Start, Run. Type COMMAND, press <Enter>. Type IPCONFIG and see if it's getting an IP address. 169.x.x.x is automatically assigned by Windows and will not get you on the internet. Type IPCONFIG /release, press <Enter>. Type IPCONFIG /renew, press <Enter>. That should get you a good IP address. If not, set your NIC to DHCP & try again.
