This usually happens in the case of aborted or corrupt downloads, or if you delete a program without going through the Add/Remove Programs wizard.
You can get a registry repair program like WinUtilities 5.0 or, mine, Registry Mechanic 6.0. Both will remove invalid shortcuts or partial files from your system.

Most of the time it is because the file is in use. You may not even know it is being used, it may be a shared file. Right click on and click on properties to see where it is located. If it is located in the system file then it could be important to your computer therefore it blocks access. It could also be a virus, or tracker so it runs in the back ground and you dont even know it. Push control/alt/delete at the same time and look at what is running. If it is, shut it down and reboot. You should be able to delete it after that. If nothing works, reboot in safe mode and look up the name of the file in search and delete it. If you still can not delete it, it is a virus and you will need some good software to take care of it.

What are the files called? Do they definitely refer to a file on your computer and not on a removable disk like a CD ROM or flash disk? There's lots of reasons why your computer can't read from source file or disk. Repost with the file names and what the icons look like and I'm sure either myself or some-one else will be able to help. Have you tried a right-click and properties? They're not hidden or read-only files for example?

Go through My Computer > C:/ > Windows > Documents_&_settings > All_Users > desktop. You should be able to delete it from there.
If it's not there go through My Computer > C:/ > Windows > Documents_&_settings > (your_user_name) > desktop and it should be there.
If that doesn't work, try again in safe mode.

you will desire to have the skill to purely acceptable click in this icon and circulate down the record which will come as much as "delete", left click to delete and it would circulate on your Recycle Bin the place you're able to do away with it with the aid of emptying the Recycle Bin.
