    In this case, it's probably easier to first eliminate the denominators of the fractions by multiplying all the terms (on both sides of the equation) by the common denominator of all fractions, (which, in this case, is 6):

    z/2 + z/3 = 5

    => (z/2)*6 + (z/3)*6 = 5*6

    => 3z + 2z = 30

    Now, just simplify...

    => 5z = 30

    => z = 6

    Therefore, z is 6.

    ----------------------------------

    The other method, is to first group up the fractions on the left side by multiplying both fractions by the common denominator, and then simplifying:

    z/2 + z/3 = 5

    => 3z/6 + 2z/6 = 5

    => (3z + 2z) / 6 = 5

    => 5z / 6 = 5

    => 5z = 30

    => z = 6
