Saying that Aflac only sells disability insurance is like saying you can only get pepperoni on your pizza, since they offer a range of policies.

You can actually go to www.aflac.com and see what policies are offered. It doesn't matter if you have savings or not, 'cause if you have one accident that requires a hospital stay or God forbid you should get a serious illness, I'm sure you'd rather pay a little week by week than a whole lot out of pocket. And with the disability that ALFAC offers, it will pay out if a family member is afflicted if it takes the Bread winner off the job.

As you can probably tell I am a little biased, and the reason for that is that I do work with them. Noone works for AFLAC, everyone is independent as an agent. Obviously since I will never meet any of you people I would not be selling you a policy personally, but as a person who likes to look out for others I'd like to reccommend it to anyone that reads this.

If you want to know what AFLAC does read the policy summaries on our website ( www.aflac.com ). Even better google "Medical Bankruptcy" and learn why medical insurance isn't the catch all many people think it is. Can you really call something "supplemental" if it keeps you from spending you're life savings?

AFLAC can be good. I would not bunch it all up into a simple answer of yes you should or no you shouldn't take it out. They have many plans that all pay money directly to you if something should happen (the specific events are dependant on which policies you buy).

They offer lots of products, and many of them overlap, so I would think it is a waste to buy everything that is offered (unless they are offering only a couple of products).

With AFLAC, as will any insurance, you need to ask yourself this question, "What would happen to me financially if this even occured?" There are lots of products that pay small benefits for simple things, like doctor visits (see Accident and Sickness plans). I don't see the point in having insurance to pay doctor visits as your co-op usually makes a visit inexpensive. There are other plans that pay for catastrophic events (Cancer, Personal Recovery, Intensive Care). Even with health insurance, you will still be sent huge out of pocket bills.

As well, if you have a heart attack, you may miss a week or two of work. How badly will that effect you financially?

If you are disgnosed with cancer, you will be missing lot of work (you will be taking many partial days). How long do you have to be disabled before you receive benefits?

If you are going to consider supplemental insurace, I would suggest giving more thought to the catastrophic event policies. Most people may be impressed with the accident policy, but I believe that diseases like heart attacks, strokes, cancer are a lot more important to insure against. And since you can keep these policies well into old age (so long as you pay the premiums), it may be something that can help insure a comfortable retirement.

Despite their commercials, AFLAC is not special. It's simply disability insurance, which is also offered by many other insurance carriers.

If you became disabled tomorrow and could not work for a period of time, do you have assets (cash) you could draw upon to pay for your living expenses? If not, disability insurance might be worthwhile for you, especially if other people (family) depend on your income as well.

Get several quotes from different insurance carriers and choose the one that would pay the most on a claim for the least amount of monthly premium.

I think you should ask about it at work...
