why do my non-dealer duplicated car keys for a 99' saturn give me alot of trouble starting it?

I got my car key (bought it used and only has ONE key) which switches the ignition on perfectly duplicated.

However, I didn't go through a dealer -- just a generic key durplicator. Now, my new key would work perfectly with the doors and trunk, but not with the ignition. It takes me a couple of tries to get it to turn.

Any insight on this? Is it really just because I skipped the dealer? Is it because of mediocre equipment used by that generic key duplicator?

By the way, my original key isn't one of those fancy chip coded ones.

Thanks!

could be that the technician who duplicated your key wasn't very good at it and didn't get all the "nooks and crannies"

try taking the original key to another duplicator and see if you still have the same problem.

Are you sure its not a chip encoded key? They don't always show the chip and our we only got one key from the dealer. We should have asked for a duplicate then and there.

Now we have to go through a lot of stuff to get a good key that works in the ignition the only thing our duplicate is good for is unlocking the car and the trunk. It only started the car once and won't do it anymore. Try finding a local locksmith they do it right. Give him the key and see if he can file it so it works.

Most likely because the key were not cut exactly right. The doors and the trunk will work with keys that are close, but the ignition requires the exact key. Have another key made at a different place.

I'd say the only way to answer your question would be to make another duplicate of your key somewhere else and hopefully it'll work without a problem...

i can't really imagine why it'd work in the trunk and doors but not the ignition...just try getting a second copy made and see if it makes a difference :-)

Ok people are you stupid... you cant go to get a key made at the local locksmith for 4 buck... It will not start you car they dont have the ability to put the computer chip in the key. The car has an upgraded chip in the key and the ignition to prevent theft. The ONLY way to get a key that will work with you ignition is a Toyota Dealership. I understand it seems like a rip off but it is worth every cent.

GIGO , garbage in garbage out.

    Your master key is worn.

coping worn to new = worn.

get new key at the dealer and then copy that.

then never use the origional. ,see?

then you will NEVER have this problem again.

    Keep master, use copies.

FWIW: i always buy 2 or 3 spares and use the best of the lot.

$1.25 isnt really a big deal , right?

It cost $5.00 to take something back ,just in gas alone.

Technology is crazy these days. Now you need to go directly to the dealer for keys. It's a security issue.
