In Northern England Git is a friendly informal term for an awkward person

This is what any Dad is naturally, but he is having a laugh with his interpretation

I've no doubt he meant the term affectionately, but he has misinterpreted the word. It is a derogatory word. One I would only use to my father when he is being particularly cantankerous and I am really angry.

He might want to find another term of endearment in the future. If he uses it with someone else it could cause serious offence.

Calling you an old git is a bit like you calling him a right bastard or addressing your wife as a whore. Sorry mate it won't do.

Lol, I know several meanings for "git," none of which mean what you have just posted.

    1) An ignorant, childish person

    2) A person who feels justified in their immature behavior

    3) An idiot

    4) A person incapable of doing anything aside from annoying others.

i must be around the same age as u as i have recently had grandchildren, i think that this word is not as strong as it used to be cos i would never have used it to my parents. my son uses it to his younger brothers and they seem to use it to each other as well, its far more lighthearted than it used to be and i dont take too much notice of it now but it was a bit strange first, memories of alf garnett were evoked.

If you mean words wrongly described as acronyms, there are many, like Fornication Under Consent of the King.

Git was originally 'get' as it still is in North West England. It means 'bastard'.
