Why is computer turning off by itself, and now, when started, runs the fan at high speed and never boots up?

Sony Vaio Desktop, Windows XP. The fans seem to be working adequately. Last week the computer shut down (simply turned off) a couple of times. Now, when I turn it on, the fan runs at high speed, the software never loads (blank screen, no signal) and, ultimately, the computer turns off again.

Did I fry my mother board? How would I know if I did? Thanks!

Did I fry my mother board? How would I know if I did? It is still powering up, it still beeps and the blue light still comes on (although for only about 5 minutes, before powering down).

If it's not beeping at you, then you're in trouble.

Check your power connections to the motherboard, make sure all your cards are in firmly.

Check your harddrive light or power light on the front: if they aren't on, they it's fried.

Highly suggest benching it. A good liscenced professional should give you either a free or low cost evaluation.

I would be looking at the power supply or the button battery on the motherboard and use a multimeter to see if the battery has 3 volts or replace it without it the computer does not see the hdd.gl
