Well, some doctors do say to wait until your baby is 6 months, but think about it, mothers have been feeding their babies from the table at alot early ages. Look at the babies from the 50's and 60'd generation, all table fed...

I am a mother of 3 and my children were all different but my son started solids at 2 months, not alot, but a little. my oldest daughter started at 4 months and my youngest daughter at 4 months. I never quit breastfeeding to put them on solids, but i incorporated it into their daily schedule. I started with the rice cereals and maybe added a little fruit for taste. Taste is very important for a baby... light (very light) salted veggies and mashed potatoes... or you could go with baby foods... i hardly ever used the baby foods, i just pureed what bland foods I made here at home. but here is the thing, you should listen to your doctor, but you are the mother of this baby, and you have to decide when it is time for this little person to upgrade to solids. you and only you know this baby better then anyone... my 5 month old nephew was eating solids at 3 months and I keep my neice 3 days a week and I feed her solids, I give her cereals, fruits, deserts, mashed potatoes, puddings, soft foods... nothing harsh...

you and only you can tell what your baby needs and now is a good time to put a spoon in use so that he can learn to eat with a spoon... it nothing else try the foods and if it seems to be too much, back off of it. You sound like a good concerned mother, you will do great whatever you decide.... good luck.

I also started my daughter at 4 1/2 months old. You can choose baby rice cereal. Start with 1 meal a day. Maybe by the time he is 5 or 5 1/2 months you can go to 2 meals a day.

I tried rice cereal first, then apple, banana, peaches, and some mild vegetables. By the time she was 6 1/2 months I started other cereals (containing wheat and gluten) , I waited on the other cereals (oatmeal, barely etc,) because of the risk of allergies.

    Good luck!

I started my 4 month old on solid foods by starting with one grain cereal & mixing it with breast milk/formula until it was almost a thinner milky mixture. Start with that & slowly go thicker depending on how your baby handles it. Once your baby gets the gist of things, try mixing 1st level fruits into the cereal as well. Just make sure that you're only giving your baby one new ingredient a day--that way if he/she has an allergic reaction, you will know what it is from. Good luck & welcome to the fun! This is where it all begins!

-Also, you need to be careful that you're not giving your baby mostly solid foods--he/she needs the nutrients from the milk, & only needs maybe one serving a day. I worked it out like this... first two-three weeks were breakfast only--then I did lunch & so on.

Always start with a rice cereal. Just a few spoonfuls to start. You can mix it with water, or breastmilk, or formula. Try it just once a day to start. It is important to introduce one food at a time so that if your child was to have a reaction to something, you would know right away what it was. I don't know if you are breastfeeding, but if you are it is OK to delay solids until 6 months as long as baby is gaining weight, and content after feeding. Good luck!

  • My daughter is also 4 months. And the doctors say that your not suppose to feed a baby solid foods until they are 6 months and you should start them on rice cereal, vegetables, then fruits. I tried feeding my daughter rice cereal the other day but she wouldnt eat it and she didnt know how to eat off of a spoon. But I think it would be just fine to feed your baby rice cereal if he is able to eat it. It just depends on the baby. They are all different. You could try applesauce I hear that babies usually like that cause it is sweet. Good Luck

Dr.'s usually reccomend waiting until 6 months old. If you must start now remember that he still needs breast milk/formula as much as you would have been giving him other wise. Start doing it once a day with baby rice cereal mixed with formula/breast milk. Keep it thin and first and gradually make it thicker. At about 5/6 mon. you can start something else. My Dr. reccomended starting with strained veggies so that the baby doesn't get hooked on sweet stuff to early. So try peas, carrots and sweet potatoes at first. If they like it good, if not try some fruits (apple sauce or apples mixes). Besides that baby should be drinking breast milk/formula up to 1 year old. Good Luck!

IF you want to feed him solid foods then rice cereal is the best thing to start with. I personally don't feed my children even rice cereal till they are almost 6 months old. They don't need it at four months so I see little point in it. Talk to your doctor, he can give you the best advice

My daughter is just over 4months, i started her on solids when she was 3.5months. The reason i started her on solids was because she was ALWAYS hungry - regardless of how much milk she was drinking she was still hungry. She had been imitating the "chewing" action for weeks (when she watched us eat, she has always had really good head control, and she started teething at 2.5months). That was sign enough for me to start her on solids.

I first started her on rice cereal - just one teaspoon mixed with milk (from a bowl and spoon not bottle). With the first teaspoon she opened her mouth willingly and had no problems eating it. She loved it.

Now she has a teaspoon of rice cereal at breakfast, a teaspoon of pureed fruit (either apple or pear - haven't tried any other fruit with her yet) at lunch, and two teaspoons of pureed vegetables at night. She is right on schedule (in terms of weight gain etc) and she is much more content now she's on solids.

If you want to consult your doctor before you start thats a good idea too - try the rice cereal first. If he isn't ready for it he will let you know.

    Good luck!

If he is happy I would wait until 6 months of age and then start him on rice cereal. After a few weeks on that start vegetables. Never start fruit first because when they taste the sweet stuff first they usually will turn down veggies. Good Luck!

The best thing to start them on is gerber rice cereal. It's much easier on babies stomachs than the oatmeal. Try just a couple tablespoons at first and you can mix it with a little bit of there infant apple juice to give it a bit of flavor. Your best bet is to do it round dinner time or the evening you will see that it helps fill them up more and they will sleep longer at night. Good luck.
