What Does A Director (Technical Support) Do?

An old friend I bumped into gave me her business card. She works in a very small company as a Director (and in brackets - technical support) What does she do? What are her duties?

Exact titles (like those which appear on business cards) are defined by the company's organizational chart, and can vary as to specific verbiage, from company to company.

In this case there are two possibilities I can see:

Director (technical support) = Technical Support Call Director

Which is the person who is responsible for routing technical support calls to the proper technical support personnel.

    OR...

Director (technical support) = Director of Technical Support:

A director (or departmental director) is usually a person who leads supervisors and/or managers of certain job types, passing direction down from the executive staff to the teams she leads. She is probably The Director of Technical Support, which means she directs and is responsible for the entire Technical Support department.

Additionally, directors are the folks who define and maintain departmental organization and budgets. They sometimes are responsible for ROI (return on investment) reports and resource audits. They rarely DO the work, they instead DIRECT the work by downward delegation.

From just a business card title it is impossible to tell. If you feel she is a leader type, she might be a departmental director; If you feel she is more the just-a-cog-in-the-machine type, than call director seems more appropriate.

Either way, you can call the number in the card -- but NOT the extension -- ask for HR (human resources) and ask them what the responsibilities of a Director (technical support) are. If there is no extension, than she has a direct line, which probably indicates the Director of Technical Support role (extra direct-line numbers cost a company more, so they are usually reserved for higher salaried positions).

    Hope this helps!

Hmm. My first guess would be "Call Director" which is sort of a combination of switch board operator and to filter the more oddball requests corporations get to their appropriate destination. Director could just as easily mean the head of the department or even a manager if they were being strange about titles. That is wonderfully vague.
