Proper Ammunition for a Colt.32 Police Positve?

My grandmother owns a Colt .32 police positive from the late 20s or early 30s it is a very nice gun with a wood handle and entirely chrome frame but the only problem is im not entirely sure what kinda ammo to use for it. it only says .32 Police CTG on the barrel and I cannot find a cartridge by that designation in any of the stores near my location and none of them knew for sure the closest I could find is a .32 S&W Long online that says it is also known as the New .32 Police CTG and of course with not being able to return ammunition i would prefer not to buy the wrong type

It may be in the now Obsolete 32 Long Colt, which was displaced by the 32 S&W about the time the revolver you have was made. Colt chambered guns for both. You might have to have a gunsmith check it to be sure, but a 32 S&W has a larger diameter case and probably would not fit in the cylinder though the bullet diameters are the same. There are some sources for obsolete ammo but it is very expensive like $1 a round.

You are correct in your assumtion, the 32 S&W long , the 32 Colt new police and the 32-44 target were one and the same cartridge, and this is probably the one.

The cartridge was introduced in 1903.

It is not the same cartridge as the 32 long colt.

This cartridge is still very popular in Europe and is regarded as capable of good accuracy. Current factory ammo is loaded with a 98 grain lead round.

Have a qualified gunsmith check it over to confirm the cartridge size, and that the gun is safe for modern ammo before firing it.
