Make sure the chain is installed in the right direction you'd be surprised how many people put the chain on backward. Cutting edge of chain faces away from saw on top of bar. Also is the chain made for that exact saw and bar. Then make sure the bar isn't worn out. It only takes a split second to hit a rock when cutting through logs lying on the ground and your chain will need re-sharpening, carry a chain file with you and learn how to use it.

Source(s): Been using chain saws for 35 yrs.

the answer depends on how much you have cut with it.

if not ant all. then the chain is on wrong.

if a little but it had cut well before.-- then you hit dirt or rock or nail and it dulled the blade.

if you have cut a lot.-- then sharpen the blade

if you have already sharpened the blade.-- there is a dept guide that needs to be filled down as you sharpen the blade. these are found right before the blade and have a shape of an ocean wave at it's peak. (don;t file this to much or the chain will cut to fast and bog down your chain saw).

    hope this helps

Run a rag along the bottom of the bar from back to front ,WITHOUT THE ENGINE RUNNING, and see if it snags the rag. If it doesn't, turn the chain around. The cutting edge of the chain should be facing the engine, not the front of the bar.

Will be a little harder but a chain saw will cut it. Keep the wood off the ground and with a cover on top. The good firewood you make will pay to sharpen the chain, etc.

Sharpen chain. Odds are someone hit the dirt with it. Hitting the earth with a chainsaw ruins the chain.

Check that the chain is installed the right way See owners manual and check your chain oil

Chain may be on wrong, no bar oil, or chain may be too tight.
