Why when throwing an object do people make a run up?

someone bowling in cricket runs like mad before throwing the ball,but before throwing it he stops,and the same for the javlin

i just wonder why they use so much energy

    it builds momentum like when you see them follow through they carry on because of all the force. (depends if you are a fast bowler) remember f=ma (force x mass=acceleration)

    It is a simple matter of physics. By running up before they throw said object, they create a certain momentum behind the object. By stopping suddenly, they transfer the motion to the object and throw it harder/farther. You see the same thing in baseball, football and basketball. The equation that explains it is:

    Force X Mass = Acceleration
