Earthquakes happen in California every day, it just depends on if you can feel them. Most of them cannot be felt because they happen deep underground and can only be picked up by sensitive seismographs. The California megaquake is long overdue. The entire state of California is at a big risk of earthquakes because there are many major active fault lines. I live in Los Angeles and small eathquakes happen about once to twice a year. The San Andreas fault is really active, It's not very predictable to when a earthquake will happen. Scientists are more successful in predicting volcanic activity than earthquakes. Many areas of the San Andreas fault is stressed, but when the pressure is supposed to break is still unpredictable. According to scientists, it should have broke a long time ago.

In sub-standard housing, usually of the brick kind. Earthquakes usually don't kill people, falling buildings do. So if you are in a well built building, you will probably survice the initial quake. It's the aftermath you have to be prepared for. Keep several days worth of water and non-perishable snacks so that you can wait it out until the relief supplies come a few days later. Flashlights, batteries, radio are all good things to have.

There will be a quake along the San Andres, but it could be tomorrow, or a few hundred years from now. Predicting them is still beyond our abilities, but preparing for them is something we can all do.
