Are Usborne books really educational and interesting for kids?
Or are they a rip-off? What's so special about them?

Usborne books, are colorful, and well written.
They have books on many different kinds of subjects, for all ages.
The books, at least a large assortment of them are Internet linked, so you can get additional information, and resources to expand on the subjects.
Depending on where you purchase them they can be a bit pricey, that' why we buy them through Scholastic's at a reduced price.
You can sign up to receive the monthly book fliers, or visit:

Usborne books are secular in nature, so if you teach Creation you may want to pick, and choose your books.
We are Christian Home schoolers, but I would still highly recommend Usborne books.

To find out if the Usborne books are what you are looking for why not visit your local library first, and check them out?
No, I am not an Usborne representative.

I actually have an Usborne book that I use to learn Spanish. I love the book and have actually bought it twice because I left the first copy at my sister's house out-of-state.

A lot of them should be available at your public library. My son enjoys using the internet-linked encyclopediae, they are very easy to navigate and the sites give great graphics and info for his notebooks. They are secular in nature (and we're not), but they give a good basis for discussion on the difference of worldviews.
