The most important part of your question is "great with toddlers" and the answer is labs or goldens. I think a big dog is better for small kids because you don't have to be as careful about how the kid acts around the dog. They also will usually bark if someone comes around and their size is a good deterrent, even though they are usually very friendly. I think the chewing and digging are not characteristics of any breeds, but individual problems.

I have a lab mix and a golden mix and my 6 year old son can do nothing to make either of them annoyed. We live in the middle of nowhere, but when the Jehovah's Witnesses find us, I open the door about 3 inches - just enough to have two big, barking dog snouts sticking out. I tell them "sorry, I can't talk to you right now" and that's that.

Most any kind of dog can be all of those things, it is all in how they are raised and trained! I would get a smaller dog just to ensure it won't knock the toddler over. Research the breeds you are interested in, it is all about personal preference!

Dogs who are raised with children are good with children.

Mostly only dogs who are left outside all day with no attention dig because they are bored!

As far as the watchdog, your pup should be well socialized and should be farmiliar with people who are allowed in your house so they will know when someone strange is around and alert you!

good luck with finding a perfect puppy!

pretty much every dog will chew or dig, and will need to be trained not to. they will all go through those phases as puppies. to be a watchdog, some breeds have "instinctual" watchdog abilities, while others need a little more training.

honestly, alot of small breeds are rather "nippy" so i would go for a larger breed -- like a golden or a lab like others have suggested. german sheperds, rottweilers, as well (to many disbeliefs, both are GREAT watchdogs and actually ARE very affectionate and are NOT like they appear to be in movies and television shows... they are only TRAINED to be mean.)

Source(s): i groom dogs, see a lot of breeds come in.

Labs are big mushes, and can be great watchdogs if you train them the right way. My dog Harley is a Choc. Lab and he is wonderful!!! Someone comes to the door, he barks, but if it's us at the door, he doesn't. He isn't a biter either. He alerts my family when he wants something or if something's wrong.

I have a shih tzu, she is great with kids, never chewed on stuff

and even though she is only 10 pounds she thinks she's a 100 pound pitbull when it comes to being a watchdog.

  • Get a golden retriever they are very friendly, if you are allergic to fur then get a lab retriever. They are simply make the best pets & pals!!!!!
