Mouse problem?
What would cause mice to show up all of a sudden. We have lived in our house for a year and a half and have never had a mouse problem, all of a sudden today we found two, one in the kitchen and one just ran out of my room into the bathroom. We do have a field behind our house, but like i said have never had a probelm before, is there any reason why they would show up all of a sudden, also have been finding spiders lately.

We have the same problem. As the drought worsened, the hawks and other winged predators have moved on, the mice in turn have increased their presence.
The farm behind us then cut their fields, to get as much hay as they could before it all dried up.
The mice are looking for water and/or new places to live. Maybe that or something like that, is happening in your area.

They are there for either food or shelter. Find out how they are getting in and eliminate the opening. Check all around the house for openings, cracks, gaps in the foundation, siding etc. Fill the holes with concrete or steel wool (the two thing that mice can't chew through). Then eliminate the food. Store all of your food in tight containers. Garbage too. If you think like a mouse then even crumbs from the toaster are a food supply. This may be the hardest part since potential food sources are everywhere. Also, try peanut butter in an old-fashioned mouse trap -it works pretty good. Be careful about diseases that they carry. Read up on hantavirus on a health department web site. Good luck.

it's possible the mice have lived normally out in the field, the reason they are now in your house may be that something has forced them out of the fields, possibly mouse over-population, or a diminished food source, or an increase in predators.
Also 2 mice does not a "problem" make. I've lived at my current residence for about 15 years, in my memory I've had mouse "incidents" mabye 3 times. It's just something that happens, a mouse wanders in. if they wern't so diseased and prone to biting, they'd be cute.

Has there been any work done around your house... wood piles moved, trees cut down, or anything like those example?
Even so much as a hawk, or owl being killed can effect the mouse population , or cause them to move from one spot, to your house!
As for the spiders! DO NOT take a chance with them, treat your house, make sure all doors and foundation vents have been treated with a pest repellent.

Differences in weather patterns can cause something like this. If it's been wetter this year than last year, they could be looking for a dry place to stay. If it's been a dry year, they could be looking for water or food. Either way, they've obviously found your home more conventient than a nest outside somewhere. This time of year is bad for bugs and mice because it's getting colder at night.

What is going on in your neighborhood?
Did they recently tear up a field? .......Are they building new homes? These changes will often cause mice to re-locate.
Also, another possibility: Do you have new neighbors who may not be as clean as the ones that lived there before?
My advice is to check out what has changed in your neighborhood recently. Good Luck.

I'm pretty sure you have a VOLE problem. They resemble mice and belong to the family of mice, but are slightly bigger, and they mainly live in places just like you described. If you have a lot of straight burrowed LINES in your yard or soil.......they're VOLES.
Do a search for VOLES online.

Has your house been without anyone for a while recently ? Do you clear your sink, kitchen and rubbish bin of any litter, regularly and daily before retiring ?

Global Warming is increasing, so that could be one reason.
Another reason could be that since this problem has never happened before, it might be time to call an exterminator.
