Vet Fee's?

Ill try and keep this short.

My cat injured her eye and i had to take her to the vet on the first visit i saw a very nice lady and she spent a good amount of time with me and the cat i obviously had to pay a consultation fee and had to pay for the drugs that were given to the cat and the drops i was given to take away. When the vet was finished she handed me the bill which i took to reception and paid there and then.

I had to return for a check up, i saw a different vet, i was in the consulting room for less than five mins he barely looked at her and asked me if she was better. Which i said yes to. He said to keep any eye on her and bring her back if she wasnt improoving. I left he didnt give me a bill so i assumed there was nothing to pay. I have today recieved a letter saying i owe them £25 for the consultation.

So you think its fair for me to pay this for less than 5 mins and me giving him my opinion and no physical examination of the cat?

Update:

in addition, i paid £25 for the original consultion which lasted prob twenty mins to half an hour and included physical check administering of drugs etc.

it doesnt seem viable to pay the same amount for less than 5 mins

i would call the vet and talk to them and tell them how you feel about everything and see what they have to say about that becuz what they need to understand is that people dont have all the money in the world to just give away. and the vet didnt even do anything so i would call and complain about it and see if they can at lest reduce the bill or make it go way.

    A very sneaky vet practice.

Generally, once your animal has been seen for the first time by a new vet, they charge you an initial consultation fee, which includes a physical checkup. These can be pretty high. However, if you see the same vet after that initial consultation, they normally charge you a lesser fee for their time, and extra for any drugs they use.

It sounds like your vet surgery makes you pay your initial consultation fee every time you see a different vet. Either that or you have a really expensive vet who charges the same for a normal consultation as they do for an initial one. Phone up and ask them exactly what their charges are.

Think it generally depends on the individual vets.. I have never had to pay when I've taken my dog back for a check up.....it's usually covered by the initial consultation fee. Asking for a second fee makes it sound like you had a second consultation rather than a check up doesn't it? I'd have a word with the vet, it might just be a mix up on their part.

usually the next follow on visit is to check the treatment is working. again, when i worked at the vets this was all part of the first bill paid. can you query the bill with the vet and state that you believed the second appointment was a follow up from the first and as such would have been incleded in the original fee ???? ask if possible to speak directly to the vet who saw you first. this is why vets are driving around in posh cars and living in large houses. lol

I find it unfair that you have to pay consultation fee when your going for a follow up check up. My dog was diabetic and so I had to take him regularly for a check up even though I had the same vet every time I was charge consulation but only paid £9.50 at lot cheaper than your vets. Some of the newer vets at the pratice charge upto £15 still cheaper than yours. Half the time the medication is peanuts compared to the consultation.

I had to take my dog in out of hours once and they charged me £35 to see the vet and the tablets were only £2.50.

But we love our animals and will pay anything to get them well.

Send a cheque for the amount with a letter protesting at this extortionate charge.

Vets are akin to highway robbers, my son took a rabbit to see a vet and was charged £400+ for the treatment.

He checked with other vets and got the bill reduced by £200 they are rip off merchants.

That does seem a bit much but unfortunately unless you talk to your vet you are required to pay it. There is no set rate that vet's have to charge and they can charge what they feel, like car repair shops. Sometimes it pays to ask around. I would talk to the vet, though, and see if it can be reduced for just a recheck. My vet charges for rechecks but it is less than the original appointment. Good luck!

I would call and ask why was I charged the same amount when one examined longer than the other? Maybe the charge is the same whether they stay 30 min. or 5 min. Good luck.

I'd say yes. I went to the docs, had something done, sent it to pathology and the results couldn't be determined. I have to pay $60 for the $50 for the doctors, and now I have to pay that whole lot again to get it done over!!!

Doctors, vets etc are just way too costly.

Yes, its a "sitting" fee. I took my dog to the vet and they spend about 10 mins with me and then charged me $45. I know its ridiculous, but they can and will charge for anything!
