What atheists don't like to admit is ,until science can prove where the material came from to start the big bang ,they are having FAITH that one day science will prove it. Imagine that, atheists exercising faith.

Why do people believe that matter popped into existence in its present state, with the only external factor causing such an event being a gigantic all powerful old cloud and lightning man?

Who said it just exploded?
I am assuming you are referring to the "big bang".... which has nothing to do with a spontaneous explosion. Last I was aware, it was about two gigantic celestial bodies colliding with each other. This is evident in the shape and expansion of the universe in an outward fashion and other celestial phenomena.
Nobody said anything popped into existence.... it was simply always there. Personally, i think that is far easier to believe than some sky daddy using his mystical powers to create everything...... and then using mud/dirt/clay and more magic to create us.
Loves the Ponies: Those who don't accept that there is a higher power are egotistical?? Is that what you're saying? Because from my point of view, I see christians as being the most egotistical people in their beliefs. They believe that there is a god..... the god created everything FOR THEM.... the god watches them.....answers THEIR prayers..... guides THEIR lives..... they believe their god did not create any other life except that which exists on "THEIR" planet...... they think THEIR beliefs are the only correct ones... they continually attempt to comandeer a country by calling it a "Christian nation"...... I'll tell you who is egotistical! I do not see any atheists running around claiming that everything was created for them, and calling their country an Atheist Nation.

Matter routinely pops into existence all by itself.
The "exploded" stuff is just a popular misreading of "the Big Bang".

Maybe because there has always been something, it just continues to transform from one form into another. We look for a beginning, because of our concept of time and space. Every journey has a starting and ending point. Time passes as we travel towards the end. We expect to find evidence that something could come out of nothing, or that God brought it into being somehow.
But maybe it (the stuff of our universe) has always existed. The word "always" is also misunderstood. If it always was there, we say it is "eternal". But if time stops between each transformation (begun by the Big Bang) than our idea of time is irrelevant, and so it cannot truly be eternal (going on forever).

I think sometimes people can't believe what they can't see. Don't know how that works if you're blind.
Sometimes I think that people hold themselves in such high regard that they cannot accept that there is One who is greater than all of us. You know, it's an ago thing.
Maybe it's that whole "can't see the forest for the trees" idea.
Maybe it's simply years and years of one's family believing a certain thing and not wanting to come to terms with the fact that the whole family has been wrong, as theorized by a friend of mine just last night as we discussed why people have such a hard time believing in God.

Because that theory sounds better than a sky faerie 'popping into existence' and creating a universe billions of light years across in six days.

People believe a lot of crazy things. For example, some people believe there is a bearded sky pixie who cares whether you have sex with someone before you're married. There isn't any obvious reason for these crazy beliefs.

I don't know, but that must be a very select few people. Most people who understand the Big bang theory do not believe that.

Matter is comprised of empty space and energy programmed to take certain forms. All matter is illusion really.
