Your first statement is totally correct . They did originate in greece and the actual pronounciation is yuro.With the abundant use of lamb meat and the onions they stayed the same for hundreds of years til Persians added the Tsiki sauce. The use of cuccumbers in greece wasnt tht accepted until persians made it popularby mixing it with garlic and yougert. Thus you have the modern Gyro,

It is a Greek dish. But the ehtire region eats similiar fare. Lamb and the flat wrap bread is common of that region of the world. Similar of Burgers were ever you go in North America everyone will have it's own twist but it is still a burger or chili or BBQ through out the US. They eat what is indicitive of there native land and that is slow cooked lamb and flat bread and it sure does taste good a bit messy but yummy.

Flat bread and lamb meat is pretty common all over the middle east, including persia, greece, etc.
