I know gyros are associated with Greece, but they are similar to shawarma and commonly remind me of many Persian dishes. Is there any connection?

Your first statement is totally correct . They did originate in greece and the actual pronounciation is yuro. With the abundant use of lamb meat and the onions they stayed the same for hundreds of years til Persians added the Tsiki sauce. It is a Greek dish. But the ehtire region eats similiar fare. Lamb and the flat wrap bread is common of that region of the world. Similar of Burgers were ever you go in North America everyone will have it's own twist but it is still a burger or chili or BBQ through out the US. They eat what is indicitive of there native land and that is slow cooked lamb and flat bread and it sure does taste good a bit messy but yummy.
