What is the correct pronounciation of the name 'zooey' in the J.D. Salinger story, "Franny and Zooey"

Zoe is a name pronounced Zo....like in, so, and the 'e' is a long vowel sounding 'e' Zo E.

But what did J.D. have in mind with Zooey. Is it the same as above or like in ZOO as opposed to Zo.

Please state your source. and many thanks.

Zooey is pronounced with the Zoo sound, not Zo. So it is said like Zooe, not Zoe. I also got confused with this because the actress Zooey Deschanel pronunces her name Zoe, but I checked and it is meant to be said like Zooe. Hope this helps! The only source I have is that according to someone I knows English professor he is 100% sure it is meant to be pronounced Zooe or J.D. Salinger would have just spelt it Zoe or Zoey.

I've always heard it pronounced Zo E. I've also heard Zoe pronounced the same way.

You'll probably have a hard time, though, finding a source for how Salinger intended it to be pronounced. He's famous for being extremely reclusive.
