Healthy Dry Food For Dogs??
Hi. I have a 3 year old Collie and a 1 year old Chihuahua/Wiener dog (I know....wierd mix...just imagine a 6 lb wiener dog...lol). Anyway, I used to feed them dog food before the recall months ago. Since the recall, I've switched them to total human food...usually chicken and rice or toast with turkey (with my vet's approval) and I give them a vitamin every day.
However, I know there have been no studies on the long time effects of human food diets and it can be a challenge time wise (or when we have to board them overnight).
I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a dry dog food that's healthy. I want to stay away from highly commerical foods like Beneful and all that cuz I still don't trust the companies. I have one lead and that's for Timberwolf Organics (anyone with experience with them?).
I'm just looking for a food I can trust...any recommendations? If it helps, I live in Chicago if there's a local store I don't mind a drive.

There are several good foods. I've tried Solid Gold and Canidae--both excellent foods, but I ended up feeding Artemis. I think this food is best for my dogs.
I suggest you browse some high-quality foods (see below) and choose a food based on 1. your budget, 2. what's available in your area and 3. how your dogs like it/react. I continued feeding my dogs Artemis because it was the only food to significantly minimize my dog's gas. All of them gave them great coats and a healthier look.
I trust the Whole Dog Journal's annual report on dog foods. It is not available for free online, but this is due to the fact that WDJ doesn't take ads and so is unbiased. You can buy their report on dog foods, though. http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/
Also, this is a pretty good site for finding good foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
Good luck!

I saw The Goodlife Recipe in our pet store recently but did not have a chance to look and see if it's any good. I can recommend a few brands though: Innova, Wellness, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack and Merrick. Those are all very good brands. Nutro isn't the worst food you can buy but it's not the best either. I just had to switch my Aussie off of it as he was allergic to it. Science Diet isn't good nor is Beneful, they are both full of fillers. For the same amount of money, or just a little more, you can get a high quality food such as the ones listed above.
