I have travelled all over Australia and have lived in many different places. If I am recommending parts of Australia to someone coming for a short holiday, I recommend they start in Sydney, not Perth. While Perth is a great place and I always enjoy myself there, it is a very long way from anywhere else.

Sydney is also Australia's biggest and oldest city with more history than anywhere else. If someone was going to the UK would you recommend they start in London or Hull? Paris or Marseilles in France? Hull and Marseilles are fine cities, so is Perth, but tourists want to see the big one first.

I don't know if it made Sydney stand out more. Its not the Olympics that does that. We had Melbourne in 1956 and I don't think it made the world picture Melb when thinking of Aus. I grew up in Sydney, and moved to Kalgoorlie in WA about 5 yrs ago. Now that I am accustomed to the lifestlye in the outback, I have to say I would never move back. Not to Syd not to any city. I travel to Perth alot, but I never enjoy myself as much as I do here.

I think people weigh too mucn emphasis on capital cities altogether, and the rest of our gorgeous country gets forgotten. There is so much more to see and do in this fabulous land.

Shush don't tell everyone we don't want them all coming over here to live.

What you say is true though my cousin came over from UK and he wanted to see the natural beauty of Australia not buildings and go shopping for his holiday that was his preference.

So he went to Monkey Mia and got to feed a dolphin, then at Ningaloo Reef he swam with the whale sharks, called into Kalbarri saw the gorges and Cervantes the Pinnacles and then he went down south to Margret River and went to wineries and walked in the forests, then he went to Rottenest Island.

His brother came over a couple of years earlier and did all the tourist routes and after they compared notes now he wants visit WA and see what he missed last time.

I think it depends on the kind of holiday suites you best no matter what aren't we we have such beautiful diverse country to enjoy.

    You should be thankfull.

East Australia obviously has more bad news than good news.

Perth sounds like a great city to live in and you hardly see it on the news, that's a good thing

You are right, people only see what they like to see, and what they like to see is given to them by media, mainly TV. And what's on TV is for making $$$$, go figure.

    Best Regards.
