Trek 6500 '07 or GT Avalanche Expert '07?

I'm thinking of getting one of the two bikes above. They are slightly over-specified for what I want right now (cyclepaths and footpaths of Oxfordshire) - but I wan't to future-proof my choice a little - and make sure it stands up to holidays etc where I might push it a little harder.

I'd appreciate any guidance from those of you with a little more in-depth knowledge.

Thanks.

It all comes down to feel. You should test ride both of them and pick the one that fits you best. Neither bike is considerably better or worse than the other.

    Ok, here's my opinion.

Based on specs, I'd go for the Trek. You'll be thanking yourself on the climbs when you have the 11-34 rear cassette. Also, I'd prefer the SPD pedals, versus the eggbeaters. SPD's are easy to get out of and are adjustable.

In addition, I own both a 2003 Trek 4900 and a 2007 Trek Fuel EX8. The 4900 is bombproof. Nothing has gone wrong with it in 3000 miles, most on very rough trails. I wish I would have bought the 6500 simply for the upgraded parts.....I didn't know I would get into biking at the time. The EX8 has been a great bike so far.

The Trek bikes just came out with the 2008 line so you should be able to pick up a 2007 model for a VERY reduced price. Shop around.
