As a manager for Tesco for the last 7 years I would day the following:
In reponse to competition Tesco would step up advertising campaigns in particular relating to any price cuts, in store offers etc...We have already seen tesco in the past advertising that they will accept 'Sainsbury's' coupons!!I would also envisage a push on internet sales - free delivery etc....to ensure a continued market share
In terms of a slowdown I would think they would adopt strategies as mentioned above but I think we would also see Tesco cutting back on labour - external recruitment would cease and focus put more upon 'growing' their own managers of the future which is cheaper, more European labour, a slowdown of openings (ie Express format)
Hope this helps

Response to competition - aggressively cut prices, lower margins and then once consumer loyalty is restored, slowly raise again but with more BOGOF offers than you can shake a stick at to make up the profit they lost!
Slowdown in UK economy - drive people instore - so event, promotion (competition/give away) and/or retain loyalty by utilising loyalty card system i.e. more points/purchase.

the same as always. massive price cuts to drive all the other competition away, using its size to support itself...
